We have been teaching English classes at the school in Aguadulce for a little over half a year now and have since begun to think about incorporating other types of activities to assist in the learning process.

Thurid spent the majority of her time as an intern working with the community of Aguadulce. In addition to teaching English classes at the school she also initiated an English program for local guides, worked on building relationships with community members through homestays and short visits and began research on alternative activities for students at the school.

The first of such activities we were able to realize was the Serigraphy Workshop. While roaming the streets of Bogotá one day, Thurid came across Rat Trap, a design company specializing in screen-printed t-shirts. She talked to them about our work and together they came up with the idea to host a workshop for the students that would allow them to print their own t-shirts.

The students were each assigned a letter of the alphabet during English class and asked to write a word starting with that letter, accompanied by a drawing. Carlos & Paola (from Rat Trap) then prepared a stencil of the alphabet ahead of time incorporating each of the student's work.

On the day of the workshop we then transported the printing machine to the school in Aguadulce. Carlos & Paula then began by giving the students an overview of how the process works, before allowing the kids to help mix paints, prepare the t-shirts, apply the paint and carry the t-shirts over to the drying station. At the end of the day the student's had learned about what happens when you mix colors together, how to make smart decisions that benefit the environment and gained insight into what it takes to run a successful t-shirt business.

Both students and teachers were ecstatic at being given the opportunity to design and print their own t-shirts and are excited to be wearing them on their field trip to Villavicencio next month.
